Was Jesus (Isa in Islam) sinless? [Islamic point of view]

While both Islam and Christianity expect the return of Jesus (Isa), their beliefs differ. Christians believe he was the son of God who died for the sins of humans. Muslims on the other hand believe he is a blessed and special prophet. What about the sins? Do Muslims believe Jesus is sinless too?

Was Prophet Isa (Jesus) sinless according to Islam?

Both the Quran and Sunnah which are the primary sources of Sharia (Islamic law) have no mention of such belief. In other words, Islam does not in any way promote the notion of Prophet Isa (Jesus) being sinless. It is rather a Christian claim with no support in the Islamic religion.

Essentially, all prophets are endowed with the ability to restrain from committing major sins (Al- Kabair) since they were chosen by God Almighty. Committing mistakes however is a part of human nature and prophets are only human. Hence, according to the majority of Islamic scholars and all (Muslim) groups, the Prophets (including Jesus) were free of major sins but not of mistakes.

Conclusion:

As humans, prophecy is something beyond our full knowledge and understanding. Thus, it is only natural to have little to no knowledge about prophets and their sins, prophet Isa (Jesus) included. Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) said:

“All the sons of Adam are sinners, but the best of sinners are those who repent often.” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah with a strong chain of narrators).

This hadith supports the claim that prophets can make mistakes too as they are also humans. One eternal truth however is that only God Almighty is perfect.

Allah (SWT) knows best.
